DESIGN ENGINEER

An amazing opportunity has come up for contract Design Engineer to join one of the largest UK Defence companies, on an initial 12-month contract basis, plus potential extensions. There is a view of starting the right candidate ASAP.

Rate: £39.43 per hour Umbrella.
IR35 status: Inside IR35.
Location: Samlesbury based

THE ROLE:

A vacancy exists for a Design Engineer to join a multi-disciplinary engineering team, working on one of the major Combat Air Programmes in BAE Systems. Design Engineers are involved in a range of activities, which are described generically below, the role includes one of more of them;

  • The design and development of safe and efficient structural and systems layouts utilising the program CAD toolsets, (CATIA V5)
  • Understanding, interrogating and interpreting structural and systems requirements in the generation of component part, surface, and assembly models,
  • Understanding and integrating complex multi-disciplinary problems to provide aircraft level design solutions (both structural and/or systems),
  • Applying and understanding materials properties, and associated manufacturing processes necessary to generate efficient design solutions,
  • The generation of primary, secondary structural parts considering manufacturing, assembly processes, mass, and standard parts philosophies,
  • The generation of both major and minor systems layouts (all system types) within an air vehicle context meeting the requirements and application of zonal and functional hazard analysis principles.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to perform tasks suitable to the internal level of this role. The role will contain, but will not be limited to, the following:

* Working within an airframe / air vehicle team to discharge structural design activities across the various work packages/projects, in line with the appropriate programme.

* Develop internal schedules and planning activities.

* Manage own workload to ensure task delivery to agreed programme, planned cost & to a high quality.

* Build & develop strong working relationships with other team members & external stakeholders.

* Attending and supporting internal and external engineering related reviews as required.

* Support a culture of continuous improvement.

The Individual

Essential:

* Degree, HND or equivalent and approximately 3-5 years' experience in a relevant Engineering discipline.

* Work with minimal supervision, be pro-active, diligent, and have strong team-working & communications skills and be committed to a delivery culture

* Problem solving skils and a Proactive approach to problem solving

* Experience of working in a collaborative environment with internal and external stakeholders

* Experience in some of the following activities:

- Design, including but not limited to; scheming, part definition, assembly definition, standard parts, compliance to system requirements,

- Materials, including but not limited to; material selection, generation of allowables, treatments, corrosion prevention planning, processes (e.g forgings, castings, etc)

- Structural Integration, including but not limited to; requirements breakdown, compliance, process standardisation, interface management

* The ability to respond positively to unforeseen changes will be key to maintaining a positive and responsive working environment

* Competent in the use of Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel & PowerPoint)

* Competent in the use of CATIA v5

Desirable:

* Experience/knowledge of engineering processes & standards

* Knowledge of the Engineering Lifecycle and typical aircraft development lifecycle
