Overview:

To provide specialist authorship and support in the preparation and review of Safety documentation.

The Safety Engineer is accountable to a Senior Safety Engineer for preparing Safety documents in support of statutory legislation, the Nuclear Site Licence and Authorisation Conditions to a timescale and standard specified by the company.

Key Deliverables:

Major Tasks and Activities:

  • To prepare appropriate Hazard Identification and Safety Assessment documentation, as required by the Plant/Project Manager, relevant to specific Plant, Processes or Modifications, in accordance with agreed standards, to meet the requirements of statutory legislation and any appropriate Committees or Regulatory Bodies.
  • To ensure that the Hazard Identification and Safety Assessment documentation produced covers the scope of operations, as defined by the Plant/Project Manager, to timescales that will allow those operations to be carried out against the agreed programme.
  • To identify the need for any remedial action or additional Technical/Safety justifications and agree them with the Senior Safety Engineer.
  • To deliver appropriate Hazard Identification and Safety Assessment documentation against an agreed Safety Strategy utilising the Safety Engineering techniques as defined by the following processes:
  • Safety Strategy - SBU(D)-PM-17
  • Hazard Identification and Sentencing - SBU(D)-PM-186
  • Safety Assessment - SBU(D)-PM-187
  • Risk Reduction - SBU(D)-PM-197
  • To support other Safety Assessment authors by providing a quality check service to an agreed scope or area of expertise.
  • As a Category 3 Role Holder you are to demonstrate and promote the necessary safety culture within your area of responsibility and sphere of influence, continually assessing behaviours in your area. Where appropriate you should raise any nuclear safety concerns to the person responsible for that activity, their senior Line Manager, or a member of the DRDL Board.
  • To facilitate production/project activity by providing proactive and reactive support in the maintenance/preparation of safety documentation for the relevant facilities.
  • To liaise with the wider engineering services ensuring an effective interface.
  • To ensure that there is an adequate level of management control at the interfaces between equipment for which an external organisation retains DA responsibility and those for which Babcock Marine retain DA responsibility.
  • To liaise with the Authorised Site ensuring an effective interface for common and specific cross site issues and resolutions.
  • To support the Plant/Project Managers by responding to regulatory correspondence and supporting regulatory audit and inspection.
  • To liaise with the Configuration and Due process group to ensure that effective configuration management is maintained and that electronic document management/filing systems and records are comprehensive, accurate and maintained.

Key Skills / Experience:

Technical:

To have an understanding of the preparation of the relevant categories of Safety documentation for a nuclear installation.

To have a working understanding and be able to apply as necessary:

  • Safety Strategy supporting techniques
  • Categorisation of safety assessment and determination of nuclear safety significance.
  • Hazard Identification and Sentencing techniques including but not limited to
  • HAZID Techniques
  • CHL Production
  • Hazard Sentencing
  • Safety Assessment techniques including but not limited to
  • Normal Operational Dose Assessment
  • Fault sequence development using IRA, DSA, SAA and PSA.
  • Determination of Facility/Operational Limits and Conditions and Safety Functional Requirements
  • Risk Reduction
  • Tolerability of Risk and ALARP
