Contract Opportunity: Principal Engineer - Product Safety (Safety & Environmental)

Location: Barrow-in-Furness - Hybrid (2 days onsite per month)
Duration: 6 monthsRate: £74.68/hr Umbrella or £55.31/hr PAYE (inside IR35)
Clearance: SC required to start (Sole UK Nationals only)

The Role:

Join BAE Systems' Submarines division as a Principal Product Safety Engineer, working as part of a high-performing Integrated Development Team (IDT). You'll play a key role in delivering submarine systems and capabilities across the full engineering lifecycle, focusing on ensuring product safety is embedded and maintained across multiple complex systems.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain in-depth exposure to submarine capability and system-of-systems integration within a safety-critical defence environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver Product Safety tasking and activities aligned to engineering lifecycle milestones
  • Support Hazard Identification and Analysis studies
  • Produce and assist in the generation of safety documentation and reports
  • Ensure compliance with the Safety Management System across the project
  • Liaise with IDTs and Whole Boat Safety Teams
  • Promote a strong SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) culture across the programme

Your Skills & Experience:

Essential:

  • Strong understanding of Safety & Systems Engineering
  • Experience delivering safety-related engineering tasks, both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated and adaptable to changing customer requirements
  • Degree-qualified (2:2 or above) in an Engineering discipline

Desirable:

  • Maritime/Defence sector experience as a Product Safety Engineer
  • Familiarity with relevant standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, and IEC 15288
  • Experience applying ALARP principles, managing safety data, and contributing to safety cases
